What to See in the Historic Center of San Vicente de la Barquera

There are many attractions to discover in the old town of San Vicente. One of them is the Convent of San Luis, a Gothic-style building that was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1992. Once managed by the Franciscan order, it now lies in ruins, but the tourist office organizes guided tours. Nearby, you’ll find the 15th-century Maza Bridge, which allows passage over the San Vicente estuary. Also known as the "Bridge of Wishes," tradition says that if you make a wish and cross it while holding your breath, your wish will come true. Other points of interest include the 13th-century Preboste Tower, located next to the old city walls; the Corro family palace, which now serves as the town hall; the Church of Santa María de los Ángeles, situated at the highest point of the town; the Hospital de la Concepción, now in ruins but once a refuge for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela; and the King’s Castle, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2002.

A Tour of San Vicente’s Beaches

Hotel Faro de San Vicente, overlooking the historic center, is located in front of the San Vicente estuary and close to some stunning beaches that you simply cannot miss. These include El Rosal, El Tostadero, and La Maza. We also recommend visiting the Punta de la Silla Lighthouse, which now houses the Interpretation Center for the Oyambre Natural Park, and the Sanctuary of La Barquera, near the port entrance. Legend has it that this is where the Virgin of La Barquera, the town’s patron saint, appeared in a small boat with no crew on board.
